How a Romanian Volunteer Team Got a Masterclass in World-Class Disc Golf

When an invitation arrived to volunteer at one of the most prestigious events on the professional disc golf calendar, we didn't think twice. A small team from Disc Golf Romania packed their bags and flew to Norway for the Krokhol Open 2025, presented by Latitude 64 — and what happened over those three days changed the way we think about this sport forever.
Krokhol, located just outside Oslo, has been rated the most beautiful disc golf course in the world for several consecutive years. Seeing it in person, surrounded by the Norwegian forest and buzzing with the energy of the Disc Golf Pro Tour, is something that words can only partially capture. This is what disc golf looks like at its absolute peak — and we were right there in the middle of it.
Our presence at the event was made possible through the invaluable support of Morten Bruun of Ekeberg Sendeplateklubb, one of Norway's largest and most storied disc golf clubs. Founded in 1998 and rooted in a Norwegian disc golf tradition that stretches all the way back to the late 1970s, Ekeberg Sendeplateklubb is a member of the Norwegian Association of American Sports, itself a branch of the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports — a reminder of just how deeply embedded disc golf is in Norwegian sporting culture. Morten's connection to this community opened the door for this extraordinary opportunity, and we are deeply grateful. Tusen takk, Morten. 🇳🇴
Our role at the tournament was crowd control — and if that sounds simple, think again. Disc golf is unique among sports in the way it invites spectators directly onto the course, following the players from hole to hole, sometimes just meters behind the action. Managing a crowd of 100 to 200 people moving through a forest course, keeping them positioned perfectly to witness every drive while maintaining absolute silence during throws, is a discipline all of its own.
On Day 1, we were finding our feet — learning the layout of the park, understanding the flow of the cards, and figuring out how to anticipate the movement of both players and spectators. By Days 2 and 3, with the crowds growing larger and more international, we had found our rhythm. There is no waiting, no room for error — the game must flow, and the players cannot be kept waiting while you arrange the gallery. Every decision is made in seconds.
It was, without question, the most we have ever learned about disc golf event management in any three-day period. More than three years of organizing at home compressed into one unforgettable weekend.
Beyond the logistics, what struck us most was the warmth of the community we stepped into. The Norwegian volunteer seniors who took us under their wing from day one showed us a level of kindness and professionalism that we will carry back to Romania with us. We shared stories with DGPT professionals, felt the pulse of the European disc golf family up close, and came home to Bucharest overflowing with ideas — and yes, a few signed discs — to push the sport forward in our own country.
We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to Calixto Garcia, Marketing & Media Manager at PDGA Europe, whose warm interest in Disc Golf Romania's mission has been a source of both encouragement and guidance. Calixto's support as we work towards formally affiliating with PDGA Europe means more than we can say — knowing that the people at the heart of European disc golf are rooting for us makes the road ahead feel a little less daunting.
This is what disc golf looks like when a community has been built with care and dedication over many years. It is our north star.
We flew back inspired, humbled, and more motivated than ever. Krokhol Open 2025, thank you for having us. See you on the fairways. 🥏🇷🇴
