The Event That Started It All — Bucharest's First Taste of Disc Golf

On a hot summer day at Verde Stop Arena, over 100 curious souls showed up to see what all the fuss was about. They came not knowing quite what to expect, and left having thrown their first drives, sunk their first putts, and discovered a sport that was about to change their weekends forever.
For many of those who walked through the gates that day, disc golf was a complete mystery. The concept is simple — throw a disc towards a fixed target, following rules similar to traditional golf — but the experience is anything but ordinary. No expensive clubs, no exclusive memberships, no dress code. Just you, a disc, a basket, and the open air.
As we like to say: disc golf is the more accessible, more democratic cousin of traditional golf. It is played by professionals competing at the highest level, and by everyday people seeking a reason to get outside, move their bodies, and clear their minds. In parks, forests, and mountain trails around the world, disc golf has been quietly changing lives for decades. In Romania, it was only just beginning.
The setup at Verde Stop's lawn was everything a first introduction to disc golf should be. Portable baskets dotted the grass for newcomers to try their hand at putting, while a distance throwing area complete with a range net and speed radars gave players the chance to unleash their inner professional and find out exactly how hard they could throw. Spoiler: harder than you'd think. 💨
A putting contest and distance challenge kept the competitive spirit alive throughout the day, with players of all ages and backgrounds discovering that disc golf has a way of hooking you from the very first throw.
And when it was time to take a break from throwing, the vibes were immaculate. Music spun from vinyl discs — a fitting soundtrack for a disc sport event — while craft beer from Anagram and a barbecue courtesy of the Verde Stop crew kept everyone fed, refreshed, and smiling under the summer sun. ☀️🍺🔥
Among the 100+ attendees that day was someone who knows a thing or two about throwing and competing at the highest level. Romanian olympian and world fencing champion Ana-Maria Brânză stopped by to try disc golf for the first time — and needless to say, she brought the same competitive fire to the basket that she brings to the fencing piste. Welcome to the sport, Ana-Maria! 🤺🥏
The occasion didn't go unnoticed. ProTV, one of Romania's leading television channels, sent a crew to cover the event, bringing disc golf into living rooms across the country for the first time. It was a moment that felt bigger than a single afternoon in a park — it felt like a door opening.
Disc Golf Basics & Chill was also the occasion on which Disc Golf Romania unveiled its brand new visual identity, designed by the talented artist Paula Lazaroni. Clean, distinctive, and full of character, we believe it stands as the most beautiful logo of any sports initiative in Romania — a visual identity worthy of the community it represents. Thank you, Paula, for giving Disc Golf Romania a face to match its spirit. 🎨
As the sun dipped below the horizon and the discs were put to rest, the day wasn't quite over. Beanbags were scattered across the lawn, the crowd settled in, and we closed out Disc Golf Basics & Chill the only way that felt right — watching Holy Shot, the documentary that traces the history of disc golf from its humble beginnings all the way to James Conrad's miraculous world championship winning shot that took the internet by storm.
For those who had just thrown their first disc only hours earlier, it was the perfect introduction to the soul of this sport. For those who already knew and loved it, it was a reminder of why. ✨🎬
