Romania Is Going to the World Team Disc Golf Championships for the First Time

For the first time in its history, Romania will compete at the World Team Disc Golf Championships — the WFDF WTDGC 2026, played from 8 to 12 September in Vilnius, Lithuania.

We are one of 28 national teams confirmed in the Open Division. The roster representing Romania will be announced this summer.

What WTDGC is

It is the world championship for national teams, run by WFDF (the international flying disc federation) in association with the PDGA. It takes place every two years and is the most important team competition in disc golf.

The 2026 edition is the sixth. The championship has previously been hosted by Canada (2016), Great Britain (2017), Estonia (2019), Croatia (2022) and Australia (2024). This year it is Lithuania's turn.

Vilnius, 8–12 September

Play takes place at Pūčkorių Disc Golf Park, in Pavilniai Regional Park on the edge of the Lithuanian capital, across two 18-hole championship courses. The main layout measures 2,478 metres, with turf tee pads, full signage and DiscGolfPark Pro baskets.

Official practice runs on 6 and 7 September, the opening ceremony is on the 8th and the medal ceremony on the 12th, with play each day from 9am to 6pm.

A record 32 nations

The 2026 edition is the largest in the event's history, with 32 nations entered, and the first to feature both an Open and a Masters division.

The Open Division has 28 confirmed teams, including almost all of our region: Hungary, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Czechia, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Alongside them are nations with deep roots in the sport — the USA, Finland, Norway, Germany, Japan, Australia and Canada.

And this year, Romania.

How it is played

The Open Division puts MPO and FPO players on the same national team. It is played as match play, combining singles and doubles matches.

That means individual form is only half the story: pairings and how players complement each other matter just as much. It is a team competition in the truest sense — something disc golf, a mostly individual sport, rarely offers.

The roster, this summer

The national team will be announced this summer, after the domestic tournament calendar plays out. Until then, we train.

And we would like you to come with us. At Lainate, the Verdi community was with the team on every throw — through the WhatsApp group, on the live scores, with messages flying between rounds. We were not seven people in Italy; we were a whole community, one message away. We want exactly that in Vilnius: to feel we are going there with you, not just for you.

We will share everything we can — photos, video, scores, nerves and joy. In return we promise one thing: to carry Romania's name with honour, whatever the scoreboard says.

Where we started

Three years ago, disc golf in Romania meant a few people carrying portable baskets into a Bucharest park. This year we have two permanent courses, the country's first two PDGA-sanctioned tournaments, and in September a national team at the World Championships.

We are not going to Vilnius as favourites. We are going because Romania belongs there, alongside the other 27 teams, and because every sport has to start somewhere.
